Mending and Upcycling Workshop for Kids
Does your kid have clothing in need of repair? Gather them up and bring them to class! In this workshop, we'll put some practical sewing skills to work and breathe new life into worn items!
This is a beginner-level class for sewists aged 7 to 13. Students should have basic knowledge of how to use a sewing machine.
Not all mends are beginner-friendly - here are some examples of mending projects we can work on in this class:

Reinforce and stitch up tears

Cover a tear, hole, or stain with a patch (or add patches just for fun!)

Reinforce worn out fabric with sashiko-style hand stitching

Reattach belt loops

Sew on buttons

Lengthen an item by adding fabric

Shorten, hem, or "crop" an item

Add a panel to the side seam of pants to make wide-leg pants
- Add a panel to the front of pants to make a skirt
Students are welcome to bring their own sewing machine, or to use one of our classroom machines.
Participants will need to have a waiver and registration form signed by a parent/guardian. This paperwork will be sent out two weeks before class, along with a supply list.

| Instructor Bio: | Bernie Taylor (he/him) is a sewist and multimedia artist from rural upstate New York. He received a B.S. in Digital Arts and Sciences from Clarkson University and an M.S. in Surface Imaging from Philadelphia University, specializing in textile design and inkjet printing for textiles, respectively. His creative interests include color theory, improv quilting, repurposing materials, functional home sewing projects, and making toys and games for his bunny, Frankie. He loves troubleshooting and brainstorming - ask him anything! |
