As a part of our 10 year anniversary we are hosting Moda Fabrics textile designer and Shibori Artist Debby Maddy for a 3 day intensive workshop. When you sign up it is for all three days. Be prepared for fun and learning.
Local Textile Artist Jennifer Falkowski has invited Debbie Maddy, a nationally known teacher with 25 years quilting experience and 17 years of teaching and designing to Madison. Debbie’s expertise includes Shibori and Indigo dyeing, as well as quilting, fabric design and many other creative ventures. She has a reputation of being a gracious and generous teacher and makes her classes fun for all ages and experience levels.
Begins with a brief explanation of Shibori and indigo dye. We’ll explore the different kinds of indigo vats; natural, synthetic and pre-reduced. We will make a pre-reduced indigo vat and a natural indigo vat.
Then we’ll move on to Shibori with an explanation of Itajime Shibori and variations on folding and clamping the fabric, which we will then dye.
At the end of the day Debbie will explain the techniques to begin stitching for the stitched designs and send us home inspired to do some stitching to prepare for day 2.
Short review of the previous day. We’ll begin learning Arashi Shibori and Debbie will demo more than one way to fold and wrap the fabrics on a pole for unique designs. We will also have a short explanation and demo on stitching techniques.
We’ll spend the day working on the techniques learned so far and also will learn more advanced techniques for folding, wrapping and stitching to resist the dye.
On day three we will continue working with all of the techniques and Debbie will give students time for more resist techniques. All three days will include access to the vats and Debbie’s expertise.
This class will take place in the parking lot of the Electric Needle as well as the upstairs classroom. If the weather is inclement, we will move to the basement dye studio. To attend this class, you will need to be able to go up and down stairs.
You can bring extra items to dye, as long as those items are prepared for dyeing ahead of time. These will be
dyed at the end of the day. Students should bring a pair of dish washing style rubber gloves, the
longer the better, and wear old clothes.
Please bring sunscreen, bug spray, a water bottle and your own lunch each day as it will not be provided. Please do not bring anything that contains pepper or cinnamon.
There will be a $25 supply fee which includes dye and choice of 2 scarves, 4 napkins, or 1 1/4 yards of PFD fabric. You can pay this fee on the first day of class by cash or check.
